Hidden Work Hunt

A Fun and Educational Family Activity

Objective: Help your kids understand the broader concept of “work” by spotting instances of work happening around you that aren’t part of a formal job.

Your Task: Throughout the day, everyone should keep their eyes peeled for people doing any kind of work outside of their regular jobs. This could include:

  • A neighbor mowing their lawn
  • A friend helping someone carry groceries
  • A classmate tutoring another student
  • A person picking up litter in the park
  • A stranger holding the door open for others

Steps:

  1. Observe: Throughout the day, each family member should look for examples of people performing work that isn’t part of their regular job.
  2. Jot Down Examples: Write down every instance of “hidden work” you see.
  3. Count and Compare: At the end of the day, count how many examples each person found. See who the champion observer is!
  4. Family Discussion: Each person should pick one example from their list and explain how that work could benefit the person doing it.

For example:

  • The neighbor mowing the lawn is also getting exercise.
  • The classmate tutoring another student is reinforcing their own learning.

By participating in the Hidden Work Hunt, you’re helping your kids understand different aspects of work and how it can benefit them and their community. Have fun exploring the hidden world of work together!
